I am so excited! It is almost Thanksgiving and I get to prepare a feast again! I just love the coziness of this holiday. I always start early in the morning to get the turkey ready to go in the oven and then I move on to the sides. My favorite and easiest to make Thanksgiving side dish is this savory herb sweet potato mash. Ready within 15 minutes, creamy, flavorful and on the healthier side.
My kids like this holiday as well. They love hanging out in the kitchen. And they actually help out quite a lot with the prep work. They are so proud when our friends comment on how good the dishes are they have helped prepare. This mashed sweet potato dish is a great one to have them help out with; they can help peel the sweet potatoes, mash them and add the herbs and other add-ins to the stock pot while mashing it all together. Read all about how and why kids should help out in the kitchen here.
How we make this herb mashed sweet potatoes?
I peel, cut and add the sweet potatoes to a large stock pot, making sure I add just enough water to cover the sweet potatoes by about 1″, like I would when I would make regular mashed potatoes. Add some salt to the water and boil the sweet potatoes for 8-10 minutes (or until a fork easily slides in the sweet potato).
Once they are done, drain the water from the boiled sweet potatoes and mash them in the same pot you boiled them in.
Now add the herbs and yogurt (reserve some for garnishing), garlic and butter and/or olive oil. Season with some extra salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
Now it is time to transfer your mash to a serving bowl. As a finishing touch add the remaining herbs, a swirl of yogurt and an extra crack of freshly ground black pepper. And that is it! Your Thanksgiving side dish is ready!
Alternative add-ins
I really love the flavor combination of the herbs & garlic with the sweetness of the sweet potato, but here are a few alternative add-ins that really hit the spot as well:
- finely chopped green onions and parmesan mashed in with the sweet potatoes, sprinkled with a bit of almond meal and parsley;
- cubed green apple and half a teaspoon of pumpkin spice mashed in with the sweet potatoes and topped with toasted chopped pecans.
Our family’s favorite Thanksgiving side dish. I hope you’ll love this herb sweet potato mash as much as we do. It is
creamy & silky smooth – herby – quick and easy to make – and incredibly delicious
