The Morticia, the eeriest of Halloween cocktails. And a scary delicious one I might add to that; blackberries muddled with thyme and pomegranate juice. Topped with prosecco or champagne in a black or purple rimmed champagne coup. To finish it off, a smoky sprig of thyme adds a spooky touch.
Not just for adults! The Morticia is easily turned into a mocktail. Just replace the prosecco/champagne with ginger ale. Add two staring olive eyes to the thyme twig or on the glass and this will be the creepiest Halloween kids’ drink! My kids love it when they are allowed to have a ‘drink just like mom and dad’.
How I make the Morticia cocktail?
Muddle the blackberries
I start by adding the blackberries, thyme and pomegranate juice to a cocktail shaker (or another tall container with a lid) and I give it a good shake. If the blackberries haven’t fallen apart yet, I sometimes ‘gently mash’ them a bit with a fork (or you can use a muddler… I just don’t have one). You want the blackberries to be muddled, but certainly not pureed for this Halloween cocktail!
The rim on the glass
Note: to create the black/purple rim on the glass for this Halloween cocktail there are two ways; either use black/purple decorating sugar or add natural black food coloring to the lime juice you will dip the glass in.
When using black decorating sugar: I prepare 2 plates: one with a little bit of lime juice and another one with the black sugar and a pinch of salt. First I dip the glass in the lime juice and then in the decorative sugar.
When using black food coloring: I prepare 2 plates: one with a little bit of lime juice and a drop of black food coloring. The juice will turn black. On the another I sprinkle a layer of sugar mixed it a pinch of salt. First I dip the champagne glass in the colored lime juice, directly after that in the sugar/salt mix.
Pour the cocktail
I remove the twigs of thyme from the cocktail shaker. Carefully I scoop a bit of the muddled blackberries in the champagne glass (filling 1/4 of the glass), making sure not to spill it on the sides of the glass.
Now I slowly pour champagne/prosecco in the glass (or ginger ale for an alcohol free drink) to create Morticia.
I decorate the glass with a twig of thyme. You can light the twig for the perfect ghostly Halloween look. For kids I would definitely decorate the twig with 2 olives to make it really creepy but fun.
That’s it. Morticia is ready! Let scary Halloween cocktail hour begin.. Wha, ha, ha, ha, ha..
