My kids are still at the age I can WOW them with colorful food or tell them it’s Harry Potter’s favorite dish. It worked for green foods. It was about time to get them into purple food as well; introducing (drum roll)… purple smoothies!
My kids easily eat a bowl of beetroot soup (they believe it’s served at Hogwart’s Christmas Eve’s feast every year). So I felt pretty confident serving them these purple smoothies. Ofcourse they are delicious anyway, so why wouldn’t they like them?
I asked them to help me make wizard’s potions I found in an old witches’ cookbook. I told them they were called: Dragon’s blood, Wizard’s wonder, and Dragonfly’s delight. And of course they wanted to help make these purple smoothies.
How to make a Dragon’s blood smoothie?
Dragon’s blood is a purple smoothie that contains frozen dragon fruit, frozen bananas, lime juice, pineapple and avocado. It is as simple as pulsing it all together in a blender, adding just a bit of water to make it easier to blend (only if necessary).
How to make a Wizard’s wonder smoothie?
This purple smoothie gets its purple color from beetroot. It is a raw smoothie; none of the veggies are cooked in order to keep all of their nutrients.
Beetroot, carrot, green apple, ginger and orange juice are all blended together. Depending on your blender/food processor your smoothie might be a but lumpy, because everything is raw. What helps a lot is to precut everything in small cubes before adding it to the blender (I use a Ninja). I actually don’t mind the grainy texture (it feels extra healthy somehow), but I mostly strain it for my kids.
If I make this for just me I tend to add more ginger. If it is for the kids I go heavy on the apple and orange juice to make it sweeter.
How to make a Dragonfly’s delight smoothie?
This is a special one. You get a totally different flavor than you expect, because of the almond butter that is used to make this purple smoothie.
Frozen blueberries, that give this smoothie its purple color, are blended with frozen bananas, almond butter and avocado into a ultra creamy smoothie.
All of these purple smoothie are easy to make, super healthy and great to make with your kids.
We love all 3 of these purple smoothies and I am sure you will too. They are
made with wholesome ingredients – nutrient-dense – naturally sweetened – a great afternoon-out-of-school drink – and just super delicious
