The ultimate Friday night sharing meal; family sheet pan pizza. Everyone can top their own piece of the pie!
As always I make a whole wheat pizza dough and I use my homemade oven roasted tomato sauce as pizza sauce. This is the perfect pizza base: whole wheat dough+homemade sauce. Now… let the topping begin!
Let me recommend a few toppings.. family favorites and just some basics
You can top your family sheet pan pizza with so many things; all kinds of meats, shrimp, ansjovies. I can’t name them all of course. So here are my favorites both classic and ‘out of the box’:
- nothing at all; the simplicity of just a homemade pizza sauce and some freshly grated cheese is my kids’s favorite!
- veggies: my personal favorites are grilled eggplant and zucchini, roasted carrots, leeks and bell peppers. And let’s not forget caramelized onions;
- cheese: mozzarella and parmesan of course, but gorgonzola can give such a great extra kick to a pizza. And I love burrata or homemade fresh yogurt cheese (scroll to the bottom of this post to read how easy it is to make yourself) on my pizza as well both of which I top my pizza with after baking!
- herbs and greens; basil of course, but fresh oregano or thyme is great as well. For greens I would go for arugula, but kale is good choice as well. I always recommend sprinkling fresh herbs and greens on after baking the pizza;
- fruits: fruit on a pizza, nay or yay!? I think pineapple is the obvious choice, but grilled peach, figs or pears are so good as well. Pear and gorgonzola, oh yeah!
- and pesto! I just have to mention this peppermint pesto. It is SO good! Especially on pizza.

How I make this family sheet pan pizza?
Homemade oven roasted tomato sauce
I always use my homemade oven roasted tomato sauce. It just gives so much extra flavor to the pizza. It is simple to make, but takes a bit of oven time. So I either make it the day before or start at least 2½ hours before I want the pizza to be on the table.
I cut tomatoes in half, line them up in a high rimmed baking sheet, drizzle balsamic vinegar and olive oil on it, sprinkles with salt, pepper and oregano and slowly roast them in the oven.
Towards the end I add onion and cloves of garlic to the baking sheet to give the sauce that extra kick of flavor.
Once done roasting, I blend the content of the baking sheet to create a smooth sauce.

Making the whole wheat pizza dough
Pizza dough is easy to make. I always use whole wheat flour to make it a bit more healthy. These are the steps: Activate the yeast | make the dough | let it rest for an hour | roll it out. That’s it! For a detailed how-to, just follow this simple whole wheat pizza dough.
Roll out the pizza dough in a rectangle. I make sure it is a bit bigger than my sheet pan so the sides naturally are free of sauce and cheese and it can be baked crispy.
Prepare all the toppings
Especially when everyone wants to decorate their own piece of the sheet pan pizza, it is a good idea to have everything ready on the countertop. Like a salad bar, all you have to do is walk along the line of toppings with your bare rolled out pizza dough.
First add some pizza sauce to the sheet pan pizza bottom. Be careful not to add too much otherwise the pizza dough will become soggy.
Now add veggies|fruit|meats|fish|seafood|pesto|and/or other toppings and finally some cheese. I highly recommend not adding herbs and greens just yet. First bake the pizza and add them just before serving to keep them vibrant and fresh.
bake the sheet pan pizza
I always preheat my oven as high as it will go. Pizza doesn’t need a lot of time in the oven, but it does need to be really hot for the cheese to properly melt and the sides to get nice and crispy.
Add the last toppings and serve!
My family sheet pan pizza is ready! All I do now is sprinkle it with some fresh herbs and/or greens and I am reading to serve it.
We all love pizza in this household. And this family sheet pan pizza is just another fun way to share food together! I hope you will enjoy it too. It is
so easy to make (together) – customizable – a great family dinner – SO delicious
Family sheet pan pizza
Equipment
- Sheet pan
- Rolling pin
Ingredients
- 1 cup pizza sauce (I highly recommend using this homemade oven roasted tomato sauce. For details and ingredients see Notes below*)
- 1 batch whole wheat pizza dough ** for the recipe
- 2-3 cups grated cheese (of choice, see text above for recommendations)
- 2-3 cups toppings (of choice, see text above for recommendations and inspiration)
- 1-2 handsful garnishing (of choice like fresh herbs and greens. See text above for recommendations and inspiration)
Instructions
Oven roasted tomato sauce (if you are making pizza sauce yourself)
- Cut tomatoes in half, line them in on a high rimmed baking sheet, drizzle balsamic vinegar and olive oil on it, sprinkles with salt, pepper and oregano and slowly roast them in the oven for 2-2½ hours.
- Blend the roasted tomatoes, onion and garlic into a smooth sauce.
Whole wheat pizza dough
- 1¼-1½ hours before you want to serve your sheet pan pizza start making the dough. It needs to rise for about 1 hour. For a detailed how-to just follow this simple whole wheat pizza dough.
Prepare all the toppings
- In the meantime while the pizza dough is resting, prepare all the toppings.Especially when everyone wants to decorate their own piece of the pizza, it is a good idea to have everything ready on the countertop. Like a salad bar, all you have to do is walk along the line of toppings with your bare rolled out pizza dough.
- Preheat the oven to 240C/465F or as high as your oven will go. And prepare your sheet pan by lightly greasing it and dusting it some flour.
Roll out the pizza dough
- Roll out the pizza dough in a rectangle that is just a bit large than the sheet pan you are using to bake the pizza in. This way there is a bit of an overhang so the edges can crisp up in the oven.
- Transfer the dough to the prepared sheet pan.
Add toppings to the pizza
- First add pizza sauce to the pizza bottom.
- Now add your preferred toppings; veggies, fruit, meats, fish, seafood, pesto
- And finally add some cheese.
Bake the pizza
- Center the pizza on the middle rack and bake for 5-7 minutes until all cheese has melted and the sides are crispy and golden brown.
Garnish your sheet pan pizza
- I highly recommend sprinkling herbs, greens (and some fruits and fresh cheese) after baking to keep them vibrant and fresh.
- Cut the pizza in squares and you are ready to serve!
