No rising, no boiling! These quick and easy whole wheat bagels are great to make with kids. The dough comes together quite fast and it doesn’t have yeast in it, so no need to rise; within 10 minutes you’ll have them in the oven!
My kids love to make bagels with me and pick their own toppings and add-ins. We make them all the time. What are you waiting for? Let’s make some bagels!
How we make these quick and easy whole wheat bagels?
These whole wheat bagels are so easy to make. Just 6 ingredients and 5 minutes of prep time. That’s it!
In a large bowl I combine all 6 ingredients, and mix it all together with a spatula until it starts to stick to itself in a large ball.
I transfer the dough ball to my dusted countertop, and knead it by stretching the dough out 15-20 times. When it starts to stick to itself and not to your hands, the dough is ready.
I divide the dough for these quick and easy whole wheat bagels in 8 equal portions and roll each portion out into a thick ‘rope’ and join the ends to form a bagel.
Once all bagels are formed and transferred to a parchment paper lined baking tray, I brushed them all with egg wash and then sprinkle them with everyone’s preferred topping.
Now I bake them in a preheated oven for 28-32 minutes. Once they are done, I let them cool off on a cooling rack for 5 minutes before cutting them open. That’s it!
Bagel toppings
What are bagels without all the toppings, right? These are some of our favorites:
- sesame, poppy and/or chia seeds;
- cinnamon & (coconut) sugar;
- sunflower and/or pumpkin seeds;
- coarse sea salt;
- everything seasoning (sesame & poppy seeds, dried onion and garlic, flaky sea salt).
And now that we are at it, here are some great add-ins (to mix into the dough):
- raising (great with cinnamon sugar topping);
- chopped sundried tomatoes;
- sliced olives;
- caramelized red onion.
Now the only thing that is left is spread some (vegan) cream cheese on it and take a bite!
We all love (to make) bagels in this household. We hope you do too, because they are
quick and easy to make – chewy on the outside & airy on the inside – great to make with kids – made with wholesome ingredients – & so delicious!
I love to make these with my kids! What else do we bake? Lots of cookies (exhibit A, B, C and D), but also whole wheat tortillas and naan bread. #weloveeverythinghomemade
